Stranded on a Tropical Island
Shaders and mesh effects establish the location
in this Survival Adventure game
In an island setting, the appearance of the water is crucial to establishing place and mood,
but the illusion of a tropical ocean can be expensive to create!
This example from a survival adventure published by Innogames shows the value of custom shaders and effects.
Markus used custom shaders to create colours and animate geometry to help convince players that
they were stranded on an island in a tropical ocean.
The refraction effect is achieved by updating meshes in real-time creating distortion that increases with depth.
Tinting what's flooded by the rising tide on the island is also a shader effect, creating a sense of depth as colours are filtered away
The island models and textures were created by the talented art team at Innogames.
Markus created all elements related to underwater effects in this scene.
